Drizl In The News

  • ‘Best Life’ with Drizl

Mood Swings’, a highly explicit dancehall EP by Drizl released September 2019 was a huge debut risk for this young artist but one that paid off surprisingly for Drizl. The project debuted at #9 on the Billboard Reggae Albums Chart and lasted 3 weeks in the top 20. The 7-track dancehall EP references the various elements of passion and love and resonated with his core female audiences around the world.

Drizl has since dubbed himself the Risk Boss as he considers himself the chief risk-taker. Self-confident and lyrically bold as he sees challenges as opportunities to tackle and conquer. His fanbase of risk-takers includes other industry veterans that have broken ground and expanded their craft to other territories. Queff Nation, spearheaded by the queffa himself, Vershon, has acknowledged Drizl’s artistry, mission, and drive for success and sees a future expansion of the camp’s brand where Drizl is included.

The 24yr old dancehall recording artist was preparing for a Caribbean and North American summer tour with the Tower Band when the corona virus forced cancellations of all entertainment activities. This provided an opportunity to focus on writing and recording new material to showcase the more jovial and confident side of his personality.

‘Best Life‘, is one of the first tracks recorded earlier this year in the face of the pandemic and is the first in a string of releases planned for Drizl for the remainder of the year. Set for an August 7th release, the track is a confident interpretation of the lifestyle Drizl intends to embody in the years to come through hard work and perseverance, a message he hopes will connect with many music fans. With catchy melodies and relatable lyrics, Drizl is eyeing mainstream appeal. Best Life is produced by Tower Music Media Group (TMMG) on the Future Weapons Riddim, a project which features notable stars such as Bugle, Jahvillani, and Elly B.

In the addictive Best Life chorus “I live my best life” is a mantra that he says he recites every day, reminding himself that things might not be where he wants it to be right now but its right where it needs to be and progress is being made no matter how small. The chorus also speaks about being the best version of you and being comfortable with that. A topic he knows all too well about as he displays his lengthy locks combined with a range of body tattoos and face piercings.

Having a now 4yr old daughter, Drizl is eager to share inspirational music for her and the rest of the world especially in these challenging times. Continuing to take risks however, Drizl opted to spark some interesting conversations with the official music video. “It looks fresh, and different and would be a great fit for international platforms. The entire set was styled and directed by Shamar Bruce, popularly known as Bru The Stylist.” Drizl added.

  • Wai says new song is ‘Billboard-worthy’

Singer and producer Wai believes his soul-baring single, ‘Losing Sleep’, is worthy of being on the Billboard charts.

    Wai – Billboard Charting Producer

Produced by Roael Entertainment, the track was inspired by a personal experience and develops with emotive guitar strings hauling an emotional plea by the 24-year-old.

I’m not in that state any more, but it was inspired after a break-up with someone I love,” he told THE STAR.

“People love it, and it’s not hard getting them to purchase the music, dem just waan do it. As soon as dem hear it, dem waan share it. The vibe weh dem a give off says this is Billboard-worthy. This is something weh need fi deh number one all over the world.”

The music video for the song is slated for release next week.

It was only two years ago that Wai embarked on a music career, working with Roael Entertainment and getting his hand in production. He eventually established his own label, Wai Fuzion Records, after being lauded for his unique sound – merging soulful and modish sounds in his music.

“‘Wai’ comes from ‘the way, the truth and the light’, and people always say I have that soul of the past and something that has not been heard before. When both are paired together, you get something new, so I call it ‘fuzion’,” he said.

    Wai – Recording Artist, Musician

Raised in Lawrence Tavern, St Andrew, Wai, whose real name is Ricardo Campbell, was part of the Oberlin High School Choir and said he was always interested in the arts. He studied performing arts at Excelsior Community College thereafter, which, he said, aided his onstage persona.

“I always knew I wanted to do music, but I loved acting, too, and was in the pantomime for four years,” he said. “From high school, I started recording myself and people on my laptop, and I always felt like a me alone can get the sound weh me want for myself, so me know me did haffi do this.”

On his label ,he has worked with up-and-coming acts like Spechinal and Koli. He is currently working on an EP for Drizl.

“That is gonna be a hit and change dancehall in a great way,” he said. “A lot of artistes want me to work with them, but I have a set amount that I work with so it doesn’t take a toll on me. It is rough to balance both being an artiste and producer, but it is worth it.”
